El Nadeem Center against Violence and Torture

What are they waiting for?

A new massacre to add to Israel’s criminal record of killing civilians; this time against 750 citizens from 40 Arab and European countries. Their crime is the organization of a humanitarian relief convoy to the Palestinians besieged in Gaza, hostages to a siege that has lasted for more than 4 years.

The solidarity flotilla was attacked in international waters before approaching the shores of Gaza, which are none of Israel’s concern. It was attacked from air and sea resulting in the murder of 19 activists and the injury of 40 according to news estimates.

Israel is defying the world, by attacking Arab and European citizens, among them human rights activists, parliamentarians and public figures.

Several governments did not stop at condemnation: Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel, Norway urges for the lifting of the siege on Gaza, France and the EU call for an investigation, Greece cancels military exercises with Israel as well as a scheduled visit by the Israeli defense minister.

But in the Arab world we witnessed the usual split between people and governments. While anger demonstrations broke out in the streets of Arab cities, the official position was to summon the Israeli ambassador and express regret and condemnation of the attack. And while the president of the republic declared his condemnation to the “excessive use of force”, he added that the lifting of the siege on Gaza is pending a Palestinian reconciliation, implicitly holding the Palestinians responsible; a position taken only by the Zionsit state and the US administration, as the US president expressed his understanding for Netanyahu’s cancellation of his US visit, as well as his regret for the killing of civilians without as little as a hint of a condemnation of the aggression which is a violation of international law.

In Egypt the president of the republic declares the opening of the Rafah crossing until further notice “to alleviate the siege” on the people of Gaza! in a clear confession to Egypt’s contribution to that siege over the past four years.

The decision to open the Rafah crossing to life the blockade imposed on a million and a half Palestinians in the huge prison of Gaza exposes the continuous lies by the Egyptian government that Gaza receives enough food, medical supplies and construction material. The UN has repeatedly stated, until last week, that material permitted to enter by both the Israeli and Egyptian governments does not suffice one quarter of the population of Gaza.

To the Arab rulers.. to the president of the Arab Republic of Egypt.. What are you waiting for?

Hasn’t the time come for a collective Arab stand against the Zionist entity? Is it too much to ask you to withdraw your ambassadors and consuls from the occupation state, to close its embassies and consulates? Is it too much to demand a stop to the export of gas to Israel and of the cement that cuts through Palestine via the criminal apartheid wall? If that goes beyond what you can do, then declare your failure and weakness, step down and find another way to spend your time other than humiliating the people of this region.

To the international community.. what are you waiting for?

Isn’t it time to treat the racist Zionist entity the same way the world treated the apartheid regime in South Africa? Isn’t it time for a total boycott of Israel? Isn’t Israel a live example of each and every human rights violation and the violation of all principles of peace and development? Isn’t it time to bring Israeli war criminals to court like their counterparts in former Yugoslavia and Rwanda etc.?

What are you waiting for?
